Hillcrest Brewing Company - San Diego, California

05 June, 2014

We here at I Heart Gay Bars have traveled the world and shared many great bars with our members, but nothing makes us happier than featuring a local watering hole just down the street from our offices. We are devout beer drinkers and San Diego has been making some splashes lately in the beer scene having been cited as the "Top Beer Town" in America by Men's Journal and a "sunny heaven for suds lovers" by the New York Times. But the Hillcrest Brewing Company, named after its San Diego gayborhood, has sent ripples through the surf worldwide as the first out and proud gay brewery in the world.

HBC opened in June of 2012 and has been serving up great microbrews that have quickly helped make the brewery become a mainstay in the LGBT community throughout Southern California. Located next door to the iconic Hillcrest Pride Flag, HBC is the fourth and newest establishment in Mo's Universe, the world famous Hillcrest restaurant group.

HBC features handcrafted beer and stone fired pizzas with bottles, growlers & kegs to-go. Their brews and pizza pies have captured the essence of San Diego's most colorful and vibrant neighborhood, with pizza names like the "Meat Packer" and beers artfully named "Pearl Necklace" and "Banana Hammock." The pizzas are perfectly orchestrated with an attention to quality from the water and flour that make up the crust, to the fresh toppings, like Italian roma tomatoes and cheeses.

Pouring only grains and grapes, their hunky (and super cute...that one's for you Margo!) brewsters can direct your taste buds to any one of HBC's own 9 microbrews or 16 local guest taps, whose own breweries have each helped define the taste of their neighborhoods.

Hillcrest Brewing Company has recaptured the essence of a neighborhood gathering place. Its welcoming atmosphere was designed to engage and stimulate interaction between guests and the brewmaster with a hands-on operation to maximize consistency, taste and amazingly well-balanced microbrews.

Open 12pm on weekends, 3PM weekdays, the restaurant closes at 11PM nightly, with the tap house closing at midnight.
